Re: RIP to a great Eagle

Van Buren's accomplishments show how far the NFL has evolved and how good he was in his time.

When he retired with a knee injury in the early 50s, Van Buren was the NFL's all-time leading rusher with ... 5,860 yards. His 69 rushing TDs were also a league record at the time.

And he had both of those records by a wide margin.

He also had a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons (including a then-league-record 1,146) when the NFL schedule was only 12 games long.

RIP to a great.

I just saw this and freaked a little because I am close friends with Chuck Bednarik's granddaughter. He has been in the hospital lately.

Eddie Edwards just punched John Ashcroft and doesn't know why.

Bednarik was my first thought as well. RIP, Mr. Van Buren.

i thought bednarik as well ...if only because I had assumed Van Buren has passed years ago.

first player in NFL history to go over 1,000 yards twice...and likely the first legitimate to go over 1,000 yards. There are a lot of questions on whether Beattie Feathers actually rushed for 1,004 or if there were catches, kick-off returns involved.

Always good when three-quarters of a thread is dedicated to people pointing out the misleading subject line.

Yep, really ought to change the thread title. Should be reserved until this guy passes away:

I don't know how many of you follow the webcam of the Decorah eagles in Iowa. Absolutely amazing.

Not so sure Steve Van Buren doesn't belong in the conversation. Plenty was written about the 1948 NFL Championship. Great photos and video came out of that game. A year later, he slogs through the mud and helps beat the Rams.

Like the everyman stories ... and, again, not sure he doesn't belong right there with Chuck Bednarik.

Amazing he's lived this long with those smoking habits.
