It is kinda sad that he is best known as Frank Barone, because he was a terrific dramatic actor as well. He was pitch perfect as the consultant/campaign manager in The Candidate.

Loved him in "Young Frankenstein," of course, and in "The Dream Team." If you could watch him suddenly start to lip-synch to Ray Charles singing "Hit the Road, Jack" and not bust out laughing, you have no funny bone.

I'll always remember his role as the right-wing factory worker in one of his first movies "Joe" (1970)

Joe was a little pissed at the world: he hated hippies, blacks, anti-war protesters and anyone who was "different".

Forty-two percent of all liberals are queer, that's a fact. The Wallace people did a poll.

Thought it was a great movie at the time. Maybe not so much now.

- LOS ANGELES (AP) – Peter Boyle, the tall, prematurely bald actor who was the tap-dancing monster in "Young Frankenstein" and the curmudgeonly father in the long-running sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," has died. He was 71.
---- Boyle died Tuesday evening at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He had been suffering from multiple myeloma and heart disease, said his publicist, Jennifer Plante.
---- A Christian Brothers monk who turned to acting, Boyle gained notice playing an angry workingman in the Vietnam-era hit "Joe." But he overcome typecasting when he took on the role of the hulking, lab-created monster in Mel Brooks' 1974 send-up of horror films.
---- The movie's defining moment came when Gene Wilder, as scientist Frederick Frankenstein, introduced his creation to an upscale audience. Boyle, decked out in tails, performed a song-and-dance routine to the Irving Berlin classic "Puttin' On the Ritz."
---- It showed another side of the Emmy-winning actor, one that would be exploited in countless other films and perhaps best in "Everybody Loves Raymond," in which he played incorrigible paterfamilias Frank Barone for 10 years.

I love the fact that he was in full makeup on the set of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN when he asked his future wife on a date...and John Lennon was his best man.

Boyle was absolutely brilliant in "Joe" .. and dozens of other roles before becoming Frank Barrone.

I've never seen Joe, but I have always thought Peter Boyle's best performance was in "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," opposite Robert Mitchum. A tremendous "slepper" movie.

A damn, damn shame. RIP to a great actor.

count me in among the geezers who loved "joe." susan sarandon played his daughter, i believe. boyle was also tremendous in "the candidate," playing redford's campaign manager.

Was the only member of the ensemble cast of "Everybody Loves Raymond" (1996) who didn't win an Emmy award for acting in a comedy series.
