The Seahawks are still in Seattle thanks to Paul Allen. Former owner Ken Behring had moved the team’s front office to Anaheim in 1996, the year before Allen bought the team, a d

He announced his lymphoma had returned all of two weeks ago.

Beyond the sports and Microsoft interests, he’d also launched the Allen Institute for Brain Science (dedicated to sussing out how the human brain works) and was funding similar institutes dedicated to AI and cell science. He was also a key backer of the Great Elephant Census, dedicated to assembling the first accurate count of how many African elephants were left in the wild (at the time of publication in 2016, the population was 352,271).

His most recent project is the research vessel R/V Petrel, after many years of using his private megayacht as an ersatz research ship.

Thing I found interesting: Never married, no heirs. I'm guessing there's some sort of plan, but could be interesting times in the months to come.

Also, that classic moment when Nate Poole caught that pass in the end zone at Sun Devil Stadium.

Paul Allen attended WAZZU for two years. He was my commencement speaker in 1999, and told a story of a time Bill Gates came to visit him in Pullman. Allen spoke at the morning commencement in Pullman. Thing is, the Blazers had a playoff game that afternoon. So for the afternoon commencement, Allen gave his speech from Portland. For some reason, doing a live speech from Portland was deemed better than showing the tape from the morning commencement in Pullman.
While he didn't graduate from WAZZU, Allen did give $26 million to the school a few years back.
RIP, Mr. Allen.

I'm fairly confident Allen money will be behind some huge breakthrough that puts humanity in a better place in the decade or two to come. A huge blow to the Pacific Northwest sports, tech, educational, science and pop culture scenes.

Coincidentally, Allen bought the Trailblazers from Larry Weinberg 30 years ago this year. Christ, imagine having that kind of money at 35 years old.

I thought he was in London.
