Manute was simply an original. A kindhearted man with a talent for swatting shots and trying to save his people. And he had a rap video dedicated to him as a rookie - who had that?

Between funding Sudanese freedom fighters, children’s charities and a vice of casino gambling, Bol lost the several million dollars that he earned in the pros.

“He gave a lot of money away and he lost a lot gambling, too,” Ruland said. “If that guy didn’t have bad luck, he wouldn’t have any at all. Once, his ex-wife won a million dollars on the slot machines.”

He was coming back from one of the Connecticut casinos when he got into that terrible car accident a few years ago.

If Manute was 50 in his final NBA season, that means he was born in 1944/45 and was a 40 year old rookie.

I lived within driving distance of the University of Bridgeport when he was there in the 80s, and my parents or coaches used to take us to watch him play. As an 11 year old, it left a lasting impression to see someone that tall. He carved out a decent career, and despite his gaunt appearance he didn’t take **** from anyone.

I had the opportunity to watch Manute Bol chuck up 3s for the Warriors in the '80s. Although I cringed every time he sent one flying, I loved his effervescence and blocked shots.

Even more heartwarming were the great things that he did for his home country and selflessness.

May he rest in peace.

His son, redundantly named Bol Bol, just signed with Oregon. He is at his third high school in four years. Two years in Kansas, one year in Santa Ana, this year at a prep school in Las Vegas. He is a senior. Wonder how old he is.

This is pretty fantastic.

Also, Kevin Mackey might be completely full of ****, but a broken clock is right twice a day. Bol certainly looked older than his listed age during his NBA days. And given his out-of-nowhere path to America, and the lack of paperwork that existed in the '80s, it's absolutely believable he was at least 30 years old in college.
