British writer whose spy novels were among the very best of the '60s and '70s. "Funeral in Berlin" is one of the best novels of the '60s period. The unnamed hero of his early books became Michael Caine's first starring roles in movies. Also an illustrator. He wrote military history and fiction about WW2. Dead at 97. Incredibly prolific guy,
