RIP Leaping Lanny Poffo

As I said over on the wrestling thread, my mother took me to my first show even though she hated wrestling and didn’t want to go.

Leaping Lanny was in one of the early matches and did his daily poem. My Mom was actually impressed with his voice and said that he should have been a stage actor.

A fun wrestler who played his role well. RIP.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but “icon?” Really?

He was a glorified jobber. Damn good poet, though. Unfortunately, my lasting memory of him is WCW paying him to sit on his ass and do nothing for five years.

RIP.

Also for fun, for those who have read Jim Bouton’s “Ball Four,” try to read “It Makes A Fellow Proud to Be An Astro” in Leaping Lanny’s voice.

You’re welcome.

14-year-old me was watching this ****. First time I've seen this in 37 years.

One of my favorite wrestling videos is the Poffo brothers against the Rock and Roll Express in 1984. They were great. Savage piledrived Ricky Morton on the announcer’s table, breaking it, after the match. Fun stuff.

I don’t know if that was the first broken table in wrestling, but I love the Memphis crowd’s reaction. They’re seeing something that’s nearly 10 years ahead of its time.
