Had always heard he was a good fellow. And it's a shame that he'll always be linked with one of the great late-season collapses in sports history.

Yeah, association with the '64 Phillies is not to be desired. Actually, Callison was one of the few Phils to keep producing during the 10-game swoon. At the one game of that disaster I attended personally, Callison hit game-tying homers in the 8th and 11th innings before the Phils fell to the Braves 7-5 in the 12th.
RIP, John. You still deserve the MVP Ken Boyer got that year.

Yes, the 1964 All-Star game played at shiny new Shea Stadium. Three-run homer off the late **** Radatz. That's when '64 was still a dream season for Callison and the Phillies.
