RIP Joe Lee Dunn

Joe Lee Dunn, one of the great defensive coordinators of his era and one-time Ole Miss head coach, died Tuesday at age 75.
He's credited with inventing the 3-3-5 defense, which seems pretty cool, and was damn near a revered figure in SEC circles in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Aww man. That guy gave opposing fans heartburn while being eccentric as all get out. He truly just wanted to play mad scientist behind the scenes. I remember his year as interim coach for Ole Miss, which finally had to run off Billy Brewer when the NCAA tab got too steep but still expected a certain gentlemanly comportment from the head coach. Poor ole Joe Lee Dunn was left squirming in his chair on the coach’s show, looking like Boo Radley if he’d been drug to a cotillion ball.

Rocky Long coached with Dunn at UNM in 1980. He is widely praised for the 3-3-5 he used to form formidable defenses as DC at talent-starved Oregon State from 1991-95 (with assistants Brady Hoke and Bronco Mendenhall) before he moved on to UCLA. Rocky Long is one fine DC, was a very good HC at SDSU and is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
