I these things have been on the books for years and exactly what is going to happen, but I'm always in awe at the precision, attention to detail for these late president ceremonies. The number of people involved and to bring it all together is truly awe-inspiring.

I thought I read years ago that they now start the process once a president is in office. There are obviously plans on the books for the remaining five, but yeah, 1986 to start planning it -- crazy.

I was at my Dad's the morning after Carter's death and took home the front pages of his newspapers. Given how the last four ex-presidents to die were all in their 90s or 100s, there's a very real chance the next presidential death, barring something unfortunate & unforeseen, will happen after newspapers go extinct.

I'm also 52 and encouraged because Carter learned to ski at 62 and he hiked Mount Fuji at 70. I've hiked all over the US, Canada and Europe, but never been to Japan. Eager to try both.
