Things seemed much better in radio and media as a whole back then.

I thought that was what 8-tracks were for.The automobile industry adding FM to car radios stuck the dagger in AM before that. The Average Quarter Hour Shares of FM stations boomed in the second half of the 1970s because people didn't need expensive home stereo equipment to pick it up. Why listen to static in mono during the gas crisis when you can rock out to stereo?
