Horace Clarke and Mel Stottlemyre were two recognizable names from a very unrecognizable era in Yankees history.

I hope Don Mattingly gets better treatment when he kicks the bucket. The Pinstripers didn’t do **** in Mattingly’s era either, and he is still universally adored for his playing days. Donnie Baseball was the man.

They had some really good teams in the mid-80s, especially hitting-wise. They just usually had mediocre starting pitching, and George kept trading youngsters for veterans to fill in the gaps.

They might have been more memorable had the wild card been around back then. By the time Mattingly got hurt, the team struggled, George lost it completely with Winfield, and the Stump Merrill Era came in. Mattingly was still a valuable player even in the mid-90s, although diminished, and the ‘94 Yankees looked to do some heavy damage in the postseason if there hadn’t been the labor dispute.

So his era was much more memorable than the Horace Clarke CBS era. Although Clarke was a pretty decent player in his own right.

There is no comparison -- Mattingly has his number retired, won an MVP and almost won another won, was a batting champ and is regarded as one of the best fielding first basemen of all time. Depending on who you talk to, he is either a Hall of Famer, a borderline Hall of Famer or at worst Hall of Very Good.

I don't even know who to compare Clarke to either in the 80s or the current group of Yankees who have gone a decade without a title -- Gardner might be the closest but he was on the last title team and had an infinitely better career. It'd might be like saying this is the Eduardo Nunez era
