Dammit. Saw news of a small plane crash in North Carolina earlier today but didn't really think much of it. RIP.

I don't know. He finished second in 2005 and 19 career wins. Not too shabby. He's also one of the few NASCAR drivers to roll with my favorite number (16), a number that seems to be ignored in both NASCAR and IndyCar. RIP.

Biff made top 75 when NASCAR did a drivers list as part of their 75th Anniversary, but "star" is in the eyes of the beholder I guess. Overshadowed by more "name" drivers during his era, he was a solid driver in all divisions he drove. His humanitarian efforts in NC after the flooding shined up his career in many eyes I imagine.

To be honest, I hadn't realized he ever hit those heights. I denounce myself.

Damn it. These drivers already engage in a profession where they can get killed at any time. Why do so many of them have the need for planes and helicopters? I get that they think they're invincible and they wouldn't be great drivers if they didn't think that way. But Jesus ... his entire family? I know accidents can happen any time in any vehicle but, jeez ...

Always rooted for Biffle, he was usually in contention during most races, so there was a little drama. That he hailed from the PNW helped too. I do wonder if drivers from "the golden era" of NASCAR, mid-80s to Dale Jrs. retirement will get more credit as time goes on due to the high level of competition.

16 from the NTSB? Granted, with my family, it was very remote and difficult to get to the site, but there was only one from the NTSB who responded on-site, and he came in from Wisconsin and didn't get up there until Monday (the crash happened on Friday night and discovered just before noon on Saturday).

Not sure yet whether he was at the controls. Reportedly two other pilots were on board. So not necessarily a Curtis Turner/Davey Allison situation. That said he was a pretty experienced pilot and flew a lot of trips to western NC after the storm last year.
