One of the housing developments around three-quarter-mile Kapoho Bay is gone -- the roads, the houses, the bay. Lava swept over the houses and filled in where the bay was.

Why are people shocked a volcano filled in a bay? Isn't that how the entire dang island was formed?

How long before a good half of the island is uninhabitable? The volcano erupting is one thing, but all the fissures opening up across the island would make me think twice about staying if I had anyplace else to live.

My brother-in-law and his family live on Maui. I talked to him last weekend, and he said if the wind is right (or wrong, really), they get some smoke/fog/particulate on Maui.

Half? Half!?

Half the island won’t be covered. The lava is coming out of fissures of the east rift zone, which is way down from the summit where the crater rim, National Park Visitor Center, and the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

If things change and the main summit crater blows, it still wouldn’t cover half of the island. Mauna Loa is a taller volcano to the west, whose slopes would direct lava to the southwest and east if things really went to hell.

But, the east rift fissures actually reduce the pressure at the summit and thus the likelihood of a major summit lava explosion.

Umm, yeah, somewhere around a million years ago or so. Doubt many today remember the event.

And"shocked" doesn't strike me as the right word, as I'm sure everyone there knew this could happen. But it's still a most awe-provoking thing to witness it in reality.
