RIP George Sauer

Did a search and can't believe no one has mentioned this, but George Sauer, stellar Jets wide receiver and hero of Super Bowl III who abruptly quit football a year later, died last week at age 69.

A great player who put up tremendous numbers for a short time -- then just walked away.

George Sauer Jr. and Don Maynard were as good a 1-2 punch at WR as any combination in either the NFL or AFL in the 1960s. Lance Alworth and Gary "The Ghost" Garrison with the Chargers, Elbert Dubenion and Glenn Bass with the Bills ... the AFL had top-quality receivers.

Sauer retired after only 5 years. If had stayed longer he easily was on his way to the HOF. 67/68 seasons he was right at top of list of the best receivers in
Pro Football.
