A great part in Kelly’s Heroes.
For the time, Murray was very acerbic for TV and he played it perfectly

almost every actor in IMDB, born in the 20th century, is probably 3 degrees from Gavin. Everyone was on Love Boat

a good life is the best epitaph

Two biggest shocks to me - he appeared on OZ, and was born Allan See. His birth name sounds more fake than the one he adopted.

I didn't know until a few years ago, he played a recurring heavy on the original "Hawaii Five-O"

My first experience with Gavin, as a kid growing up, was as Captain Stubing.

I didn't know he had any role till years later on the MTM Show which I didn't start watching till last year.

Gavin played Murray Slaughter as well as anyone could have. His comic timing and delivery, and his voice, are rather unique in TV history.

With all the Friends reunion stuff, I read how the six get $20 million a year from syndication. Surely MacLeod and the Love Boat cast has done OK, given that the show is still humming all around the world.

I've watched a lot of "Love Boat" lately because there's a 24 hour "Love Boat" channel on Pluto TV and it's kitschy and ridiculous and it's fun to see the pseudo-celebrities of the 70s I'd forgotten about. Avery Schreiber! Donny Most! Kristy McNichol!

But mostly the show is dreadful. It's much worse than I remember it being and I remembered it as being terrible. And not long ago it struck me -- what was that like for Gavin McLeod? He went from playing a brilliant, funny man in one of the best-written shows in TV history to playing a cartoonish Cap'n Crunch character on one of the worst. They never did him any favors in that role -- Captain Stubing was dull and inconsistently written. I suppose he enjoyed the paychecks but lord, was that a massive step down from Murray Slaughter.

Anyway, RIP. I'll remember him ripping a script out of a typewriter and mocking Ted... and not waddling around in ill-fitting shorts asking "Where's Gopher?"

Since he did commercials for Princess Cruises after it went off the air I don’t think he minded too much

This one's for the Captain (not Jeter).

He was the villain in the very first episode of Peter Gunn! I know he was both a murderer and a mere suspect in different Perry Mason episodes. Unbelievable career.
