I think he became more famous in the last 20 years (or however long it’s been since Moneymaker won the WSOP). But Super System was published in 1979. He was degenerate-famous back then.

For the last twenty years, he’s looked like he’s 89. A couple months ago, I checked to see if he was still alive.

A pioneer. Another guy who found a hard life to make an easy living.

Back in the day when I produced some segments for WSOP, Doyle was sitting at a table waiting patiently for me and Annie Duke to tape a vignette. I got there before she did and I asked him if he’d seen Annie. He raised his nose up and loudly sniffed. “Nope,” he snarled, “And I don’t sniff 3-day old tuna either so I don’t think she’s anywhere around!”
I knew then he was cantankerous as they come.

I read his SuperSystem books multiple times early in the poker boom, when I was one of many young dumb kids who thought they could make a living at poker. Eventually I found out that the only reliable profit in poker was reselling the books.

I’ve read a whole bunch of poker books and his Super System is by far the best. Caro’s books are about the only other ones worth a damn (that I have read, at least). Hellmuth, Negranu, Hansen, Sklansky … all pretty worthless.

Doyle was indeed a legend. I’ve seen him at a few tables, but never had the roll to sit with him.

The "cast" for some of those ESPN poker shows was phenomenal - Brunson, Ivey, Helmuth - different styles, different generations. TV Gold.

When the Moneymaker WSOP was aired on ESPN live, I remember thinking about Brunson that I know that guy. Was it just from prior WSOP's that I passed by or did he have some popular presence?
