Oail Andrew “Bum” Phillips Jr., who spent half his adult life as a football coach and every waking moment as the personification of all things Texan, died Friday at his ranch in Goliad.

Phillips was three weeks past his 90th birthday and more than three decades removed from his heyday as head coach of the Oilers from 1975 through 1980. But he remains the personification of a time, a place and a team that remains deep in the hearts of everyone who saw them play.

Loved the silhouette of him with the 10-gallon hat at Texas Stadium.

I was too young to remember the late 70s Oilers teams, but if not for the Steelers, they would have had a pretty damn good shot at winning the Super Bowl.

Once he was asked why he didn't wear his cowboy hat on the sidelines in games at the Astrodome. He said it was because it wasn't polite for a man to wear a hat indoors.

I always wondered what the "O.A." stood for. I only thought Texans went by their first two initials.

Saw him last year or the year before on NBC on Sunday Night. They showed Bum at a Texans game and he looked younger than his son.

My favorite Bum quote was, on Earl Campbell: "If he's not in a class by himself, it doesn't take long to call roll."

Bum was my first celebrity autograph, when I was 9 years old, at the 1983 Senior Bowl. RIP.

I started following football in 1978. As a kid, I thought guys like Bum Phillips were normal. Took the passage of time to realize he was a complete original.

During his Saints days, I remember a Falcons fan swiped his cowboy hat in Atlanta and ran off into the crowd with it. I remember thinking it wasn't right ... you don't **** with Phillips' hat.

His image is plastered around Reliant Stadium for some BBQ that he endorses.
Bum was sainted by the city of Houston.
I last saw him and did an interview at a Mobile Seagulls arena game back around 2001. His son was coaching whoever Mobile was playing that night and Bum was in town for the game.
He was extremely down-home and folksy...very approachable.
The game has lost an icon.
