RIP Bruce Brown, 80 -- "The Endless Summer"

Very sad news that Bruce Brown, 80, died on Sunday of natural causes. I remember as a teenager watching "The Endless Summer" and being totally blown away by the whole concept of surfing and following summer all around the world. Great filmmaker.

Loved that movie and, to a lesser extent, the sequel. My 14-year-old surfer self couldn’t get enough of the idea of chasing waves around the world.

Haven’t been in a barrel in about 15 years (though I’ve done some low-key stand-up paddle boarding), but that movie stoked my love of the surf life for a long time. Hoping to get my son on a board next summer and I may take it back up myself. My longboard is still hanging in my shed.

A friend of mine from high school was one of the cinematographers in "Endless Summer 2." I asked him how they filmed the part where there lions got onto the flimsy beach buggy and ripped some thing apart. Seeing as how you really don't want your two stars to be mauled by lions, how did they film it? He said they spread a lot of chicken parts and chicken blood all over the beach buggy so the lions would go for that and not the actors.
"The Endless Summer" is still the best surfing documentaries ever. It is an odd coincidence that Corky Carroll, in his Saturday column in the OCR, is in the midst of a series on "The Making of The Endless Summer." He has published two so far. Safe to say No. 3 will need some serious reworking.
