Genius gets thrown around too casually in pop culture. But that guy certainly was one. And Gee is right for those of us in flyover country, The Beach Boys were California - even for a teenager in the 1980s.

I can't think of many artists whose music evoked a time and place like Brian Wilson did with southern California in the early Beach Boys songs. First time I went there it was exactly like I pictured it listening to those records.

"Sloop John B," "California Girls," "Help me Rhonda" and "God Only Knows" are probably my favorites. Never saw them, I did see Carl Wilson when he was touring on his own.

They sure helped make California look and sound cool in the 1960s and 1970s.

I did grow up here. The beach and surf culture IS my life. I can remember when I was about 12 debating that the Beach Boys were better than the Beatles. What did I know ..... but that was their influence on me.

Damn, the Beach Boys were smack dab right in the middle of my youth and I very much enjoyed them.

The Beach Boys TV mini-series about 15(?) years ago was fascinating and brought them back to my consciousness. Now with Spotify I can enjoy them every day.

Maybe the Beach Boys aren't as good as the Beatles, but . . .

The final vocal rounds of "God Only Knows" deserved to be four minutes long more than the "na-na-na-na" coda at the end of "Hey Jude."

Endless Summer is one of the best compilations ever released. I Get Around is probably my fave song from the early days with Help Me Rhonda and Don't Worry, Baby taking place and show.

As great as God Only Knows is, I'm also a huge fan of Caroline, No and Wouldn't It Be Nice off Pet Sounds. Sail On, Sailor and Sloop John B. also get a lot of listens from me.

When we lived in Charlotte, we occasionally went to this concert series that typically plays pre-1800 music. One of the themes one night was "Music of Blackbeard." Basically a lot of old songs about the sea. A surprising final song, played on harpsichord, flute and viola, was Sloop John B (which dates to at least 1916). Wife was stunned when people started singing along ("How do they know the words??")
