Tubbs brought then top-ranked Oklahoma into raggedy assed Fitzgerald Field House to play Charles Smith and Jerome Lane-led Pitt in 1988. After a hearty ass kicking, Tubbs told the assembled press, “thank God this game wasn’t televised. I wouldn’t want people thinking we play in places like this.”

As I mentioned, he and I were distantly related. My mom and Billy’s brother, Wayne, have remained close for decades. We’d go to stay with Wayne and his wife and go to Norman for a game or two every season. “Uncle Billy” was a saint to us. I’d come home with a new pair of Nikes and OU swag.

And his daughter would always introduce me to her fellow OU pom squad coeds. As a young teen, That was always the highlight of the game.

Many reasons, but the conference games meant more back then.

Yep. For one, there were fewer of them. And they were all against schools you knew and recognized. No unworthy interlopers who somehow squeezed their way in with football and/or politics. It made sense.
