Yes. This was around the time Sean Young and a few other ingénue types were confessing to mental illnesses of varying flavors. It was shrugged off.

The Heather Graham character in Bowfinger was supposedly based on Heche. It made me side-eye Steve Martin's work for a long time.

Couldn't the same be said of the writer and editor who let "Mini Copper" through? Or just honest ignorance?

Volcano is one of my all-time favorite bad movies. The lack of a romantic angle between Heche and Jones might be the smallest plot hole in that script.

The Heather Graham character in Bowfinger was supposedly based on Heche. It made me side-eye Steve Martin's work for a long time.

That Bowfinger fact was pretty well known, they’d recently split. Very gross in hindsight that Martin did that, mental illness or not.

As an aside I quite liked Heche as the wife in Donnie Brasco.

I've heard other actresses of that vintage talk about that time in Hollywood.
Nobody really knew what depression was circa 1987. Or even in 1998, as Ryan Leaf has talked about.
Lara Flynn Boyle was another who was reputed to be on the crazy side.
