RIP Ahmad Jamal

I actually discovered him thanks to an 8-track, of all things. My father had 'Live at the Pershing' album in that format that I found when I was just beginning to discover jazz as a senior in high school. At the time, I had recently purchased an 8-track player at a flea market and thus was one of many who thoroughly enjoyed "Poinciana," along with "But Not For Me," "Woody 'N You," etc., from this album. Later I found "The Awakening," and it was off to the record stores to find more by him.

Also liked his 1955 album "The Ahmad Jamal Trio," which was piano, guitar and bass.

Yeah he was a fave of my daddy’s as well. I can still hear the first notes of that album as he drops the needle.
