It's unconfirmed. Do you run it? Or wait around for someone to confirm. In the internet age, you run it. Put a ? on it if you must.

**Small add, insignificant, really ... hypothetical is Moddy's word, not mine.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated

YOU DO NOT RUN ANYTHING THAT IS NOT CONFIRMED - GOD DAMN. HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND?

Now, put "hypothetical" in your title or I will.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

So is there a rumor that he's leaving, or is this totally a fabricated piece of crap from TBL?

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

Uh, the Watchdog at Newsday has it from 'sources.'

Does that work?

That you even have to ask ...

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

So if a newspaper blog reports it from 'sources' then it flies ... but if a random blog reports it, no good?

If the watchdog has credibility, yeah. Most blogs have not been established long enough to have that kind of credibility.

That said - I can believe it. All this Patrick stuff, the other changes. But I won't believe it until I see it credibily reported.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

The Watchdog is Neil Best. He's a seasoned newspaper veteran. He's been around a lot longer than The Big Lead.

Nobody else is going to really report this. It matters not to the casual newspaper reader. So does hypothetical come down?

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

You should get a comment from Matt Leinart's baby momma(s).

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

So Neil Best is saying Reilly is leaving.

If this is true, it's pretty damn big news. I'm suspicious of the timing of that (5 p.m. on a Friday) unless SI thought it really could keep it on the hush-hush -- and it can't. People notice.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

I definitely believe it... I'll bet SI is sick of paying seven figures a year someone who phones it in more often than not...

People will notice, but it's still the way you try to bury a story...

Who will notice? This will appear in zero newspapers tomorrow. Even if it's confirmed in 10 minutes.
I have one source saying it's official, and FWIW, I don't think we've been wrong about a newspaper writer movement yet (but clearly, this is Watchdog's scoop).

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

People will notice when he's not in the mag. It's kind of hard to hide that.

Who gets Rick Reilly's backpage column?

Assuming he's gone (more than a couple people are saying this now), let's hear some names that will be considered.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

Some will. He hasn't been must-read in a while. Many won't know he's gone.

Re: Who gets Rick Reilly's backpage column?

We don't need multiple Reilly threads. Merge coming.

Re: Rick Reilly leaves Sports Illustrated - HYPOTHETICAL

Well the Watchdog item says his contract will not be renewed. And his contract, per Watchdog, is up at month's end. So you'll see him for a couple more weeks.
