Also covered the Spirits of St. Louis. Watched a video clip this morning in which Rick tells the story of Bad News Barnes asking post-game if Rick will drive him to a party.
Several good clips available at the P-D's website.

Their Cardinals' coverage is their bread and butter. Year-round coverage. Derrick Goold works a ton.
Same with KMOX. Without them, the station might not pay its power bill. Exaggerating, of course, but it would be interesting to know what percentage of its billing is Cardinals-related.

The Cardinals have the biggest affiliate network of all MLB teams. The games shifted to the FM side of KMOX a few years ago but now I understand they've migrated back.

This is their basic OTA market description:

Live St. Louis Cardinals Coverage from NewsRadio 1120 AM KMOX

****, the Cardinals were the team for half the country before teams moved west. The Mighty MOX reached far and wide.

Mark Whicker wrote a wonderful column today about Rick. It's on Substack. Whik recounted a story about Rick and a couple of others who came up with names for the MLB managers and the animals they resembled. Bobby Cox was the Jackal, Mike Scioscia the Hog, etc.

Last year, when Rick retired, Whik also wrote about that and I recalled a slow afternoon at the winter meetings in Waikiki in 1982. Rick and a few of us sat around and came up with matchups for a BBWAA wrestling tournament. The ones that I remember were Tim Kurkjian vs. Ken Gurnick in a strawweight bout. And, Chris Mortensen vs. Paul Meyer in a welterweight battle. Whik said he thought Kurkjian would beat Gurnick. And he felt that Meyer would start strong against Mort, but have to stop for a cigarette after 2 minutes and Mort would gain the advantage.

As much as I respected Hummel, Goold is a much better writer. I don’t read many others, but I can’t imagine there’s many better.
