Remarkable Alan Schwarz column on Lidle

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I listened to Schwarz being interviewed tonight about this, when the story broke. I couldn't believe it. Just eerie.

Good leg work to talk to the guys at the pool hall.

And the ending is chilling, to say the least.

I didn't realize journalists and players could be poker buddies.

I know of some guys who play golf with players sometimes on the road, too. You spend that much time together, you have to be human beings at some point. I have no problem with it whatsoever.

So long as, if something ever comes up that requires him to do so, reporter discloses relationship with player to readers during coverage of story.

I was just about to post this after reading it. That was great writing and definitely left a lump in my throat at the end.

Ok, I'll be the one to say it.

My tape recorder was off. Cory and I chatted about a lot of things over the years.

And he remembered them verbatim and directly quoted him throughout. If Albom had written this, this thread would be entirely different. Just sayin'.

I'd argue that mentioning that the tape recorder was off was a nicely-veiled nod toward saying the rest of the conversation was paraphrased.

That's the way I read it too.

Junkie, if that's you got from that column ... man, you need to defrost yourself or get a pacemaker or something to get your blood moving.
