Extraordinary story of a steroid user. You wonder how many others feel or felt like this:

The irony of this story shows what I thought was going to be a great life of fame and fortune turned into the destruction of other lives, and for me, a living hell - one filled with depression, anger, unhappiness, suicidal thoughts and God.

Interesting yes - Extraordinary no. How come there was not mention of the fact that Naulty was not on Yankee World Series roster. Perhaps that was the source of his depression.

Look at Naulty's regular season numbers. He was the Yankees inning burner. Of his 33 appearances 28 resulted in Yankee loses. Most of time he came in, The Yankees were losing.

What a joke and diservice to readers. Does the News really think that no one would remember that Naulty was not on post season roster. Talk about lack of perspective.

This seems to be more than a steroids story to me.
Naulty, like Caminiti before him, seems to have substance issues that go across the board.

Judging by what we've read about steriod usage, players are described as one of two ways: Troubled souls, or have an agenda (book to sell)

Caminiti
Canseco
Naulty

or "one time users" who took the stuff to rehab an injury:

Petite
Brian Roberts
Fernando Vina
Gary Bennett

Out of the thousands of players over the past couple decades, nobody was just consistently using it to be a better player.

Judging by his record steroids clearly did not help Naulty.

Actually, they did. He gained 50 pounds and added 10+ mph to his fastball. It still wasn't enough.

If Naulty had gotten a win or save in World Series I wonder if he would have been depressed. In reality Naulty was about 1 step above the bullpen catcher in his importance to the Yankees.

It's a four part series. There's plenty of time and space for him to say he wasn't on the roster.

And, quite honestly, other than you and the die hard idiots, who is going to remember Naulty was not the post season roster?

Where does it say it's a four part series?

I'm wondering why you would feel it important to judge a person on what he/she should be depressed about?

OK, I read it again....why is this a story about steroids and not a story about depression and drug abuse?

Duh, depression and drug abuse are so '90s. This is the steroid era, baby, steroids sell.

Geez - what has happend to the news business where eveyone is so quickly to cut news organizations slack for cutting corners.

Obvioulsy the News wanted to uninformed to believe that Naulty was an important part of World Series team. It seems like an important fact to me that Naulty was not on post season roster.

In the story, it said he appeared in 33 games. And there was no mention of him appearing in a playoff game.

I guess Boom didn't read this line:

After six weeks of 1999 spring training, I had made the team. Although it was in a minor role, I was on the team.

Nowhere does this piece imply that Naulty was anything other than a fringe player, which has absolutely nothing to do with the story, anyway.

And I guess spit did not read the first paragraph of the whole story that places Naulty in the dugout when World Series ended.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera got Atlanta Braves designated hitter Keith Lockhart to pop up to left field for the final out of the 1999 World Series - Oct. 27 - giving the Bombers a four-game sweep of the Braves and their third title in four years under manager Joe Torre. Reliever Dan Naulty appeared in 33 games for the Yankees that season and was in the dugout when the Yankees clinched.

For anyone who did not know any better you would have thought Naulty was on World Series Roster.

Well, not really, boom, because a reliever on the roster would not be sitting in the dugout, he'd be sitting in the bullpen.
Non-roster players are allowed in the dugout.

Besides, it is of no consequence to the story. You're the only one who cares whether Dan Naulty was on the WS roster or not.

That's BS and you know it. The story is about Naulty being depressed after World Series. Do you think a player who got left off post season roster is going to feel a tad empty while his teamates who actually played in the series celebrate.

The News clearly wanted to make this a bigger story than it was.
