Ninety-one per cent of Americans believe sending text messages while driving is as dangerous as driving after having a couple of drinks, but 57 per cent admit doing it, a poll released today said.

The Harris Interactive survey commissioned by mobile messaging service Pinger Inc. found 89 per cent of respondents believe texting while driving is dangerous and should be outlawed.

Even so, 66 per cent of the adults surveyed who drive and use text messaging told pollsters they had read text messages or e-mails while driving. Fifty-seven per cent admitted to sending them

What about the ones who text while driving after a few drinks?

I do that too. :)

To be fair, most of the texts I sent this weekend from my car came while I was in traffic, so only going like 40.

I prefer to drive and surf the internet on my awesome phone (Gutter, you are so jealous)

I'm admittedly way, way behind on technology, but the thought of someone -- especially teenagers -- texting while driving is just mind-boggling to me.

When I see people talking on the phone (sans hands-free device) or texting, I just run their asses off the road. Even better when going over a bridge like the GW or Pulaski Skyway.

Yeah, but your mother really wants to know why she should bring some candles and a whip and your boyfriend's sorry that your aunt died.

OK, we've now entered the Land Of What I Don't Need To Know.

What? They don't make the candles I like here, and I can't be seen buying whips.

I wasn't going to USE it with her. It was supposed to be a surprise for the boyfriend.
