The successful reporter on this beat will execute on lightning-fast stories and posts on the latest from the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, colleges and more across the Pacific Northwest, with an emphasis on happenings in the Tacoma-Seattle area. She or he will also serve as a second reporter on the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners and the University of Washington, backing upbeat reporters when needed.
However, the principal intent is that you drive a diversity of sports conversation online.
Responsibilities
The Real-Time Reporter will be responsible for writing, compiling and/or producing stories and posts on what makes being a Pacific Northwest sports fan so maddening, or so fun. There is a great opportunity to tell stories, whether it’s the latest endeavor of Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciarra, or what Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto said in his latest podcast.
Reporting can humanize our on-field heroes or make us shake our heads in ways a true fan can appreciate (ie: the latest developments in the Huskies-Cougars rivalry).
This reporter will work for all five of McClatchy’s news organizations in the Pacific Northwest: The Tacoma News Tribune, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald, The Tri-City Herald and the Idaho Statesman. Her or his stories will appear across sites and platforms, ensuring this reporting is seen across the region. Expect to work weekends and some nights, with some copy editing duties, too. The position is based in Tacoma and reports to the Tacoma News Tribune Sports Editor.
Requirements
The most compelling candidates will have:
Energy, flexibility, and online smarts. The ability to monitor a vast amount of information for a wide audience, matched with discerning judgment about what to pursue. The ability to execute both quickly and well, with creativity.
McClatchy is looking for a great Real-Time Sports Reporter.
