Rain cuts short women's college bball game

Interesting that they'd see the need to move a woman's college game to a freakin stadium.

I am probably one of the few who has covered a rain delayed women's college basketball game before. It stormed so bad outside that the roof of the arena began leaking at two or three different areas of the court. It was 30-45 minutes before it eased up and the leaking stopped, and the team I was covering could finish receiving its 100-something to not very many ass whipping.

Arizona State (10-1) beat Texas Tech 61-45 on Monday night when the second outdoor game in women's college basketball history was called on account of rain with 4:18 to play at Chase Field, home of baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks.

I had that happen at a high school game once. We got about 10 inches of snow, then it warmed up to about 60 degrees and there was a downpour. Roof began leaking in about 10 places and was dripping right through one of the cylinders.

Gym is closed now.

Since it was in the 50s, some of the players wore long-sleeve shirts under their uniforms.

Arizona State did this seven years ago. I was in Phoenix over the weekend and there was a forecast all day for rain Monday night. And, yeah, close the roof. That's why it's there.

Michigan-Michigan State outdoor hockey game? Great idea.

Women's non-conference basketball outdoor game in a 50-60,000 seat stadium? Unbelievably stupid idea.

Whoever greenlighted this stroke of genius at ASU should shot then fired.

The UH-UCLA Astrodome game isn't even in the same hemisphere in terms of comparison. Elvin Hayes vs. Lew Alcindor drew what I believe is still a record 52,000+ people.

But it's women's hoops so I guess it's ok to essentially put a bunch of money in a pile and light it on fire like this.

They did it once before, when it was truly a novelty. And having the Lady Vols come to town certainly helped interest. This time, not so much.
