Rizzs was decent. Rathbun is an abomination. Rick was tainted both by association and the circumstances in which he took the job.

They were jokes. Only difference was Rizzs thought he was clever, Rathbun just didn't get it...

Rathbun and Paciorek in the Braves' booth the last couple years was the most incompetent crew I've ever heard in my life. They both talked to you like you were 7. It was ****ing embarrassing.

When Paciorek was paired with Hawk Harrelson on the south side of Chicago, that produced what had to be the worst pairing of TV announcers in history ... Hawk spent the entire game cheering, while Wimpy was dumbing things down as far as they could go.

They were the worst ... until Darrin Jackson joined Hawk (maybe the Sox just need to simulcast Ed Farmer, who is pretty good, on TV).

Mind you, Darrin Jackson was "playing" outfield - when he wasn't ****ing injured - for the Jays at the time.

WGN played hardball with Brennaman and essentially let him go because he wanted a weekend day off to work for Fox, so he just bolted and went to Fox full-time (he's now in Cincinnati with his dad). However, the two guys who replaced him -- Josh Lewin and Chip Caray -- both announced games for Fox on Saturdays while they worked for WGN. Now, they're all gone, thanks to some sniping between Andy McPhail, Dusty Baker & the broadcast team (because the players were upset with Stone's criticism in 2004 and the front office basically threw Stone & Caray under the bus).

Much like the Sox, the Cubs radio broadcasts feature one of the best in Pat Hughes. Ron Santo would be barely tolerable -- especially if you're not a Cubs homer -- if Hughes didn't do an unbelievable job in holding the broadcast together and playing off of the really bizarre stuff that comes out of Santo's mouth.

Couldn't agree more with you on this. I certainly am not a Cubs fan, hense the username, but if I wanted a bunch of "Yeah!'s" and "al right's", I'd attend the game and sit next to the drunken bums. Hughes makes cubs games listenable and plays off of Santo, and/or covers him up rather well.

Dave Niehaus has clearly slipped the past five years or so. He makes way too many mistakes, but he'll be the M's guy until he dies, if he wants to. His biggest fault is never telling the score. I mean never, sometimes even at the end of a half-inning.

Rick Rizzs is a cheerleader for the M's, of course, but is very competent. No one would have been accepted following a legend like Ernie Harwell in Detroit, especially a legend who left under less-than-happy circumstances.

I felt sorry for Rizzs yesterday having to do the "kid in the radio booth" interview he has to do every game. KId gave one-word answers to al his questions, most of which were open-ended.

M's broadcasts (and all broadcasts, probably) have become so clutterd with sponsor tie-ins it's much harder for the announcers to do the game in an even flow because they're shilling "the Jorvy Roofing weather outside" or the "Magnolia Moment" every half-inning.

I'm not a big Josh Lewin fan, but the last time I heard him a ton was when he was on his first year with the Cubs, when he was really, really young.

He does do some Fox broadcasts, but usually is banished to the third or fourth game of the week.

Yes, those morons still do Picks to Click with the production staff.  Utter mindless waste of space, I tell you. Am I seeing things, or do Darrin Jackson has a lazy eye? Reinsdorf must have told the Sox trainer to shoot DJ up with a truckload of tranquilizers or ADD. Dude looks "doped" up.

Speaking of who was in the Cubs broadcast booth, I remember when Thom, Ron, Brenly, along with Harry did the radio side for several years in the early 90's.  Dwayne Staats did the t.v. side with Harry and Steve.  Pretty solid group calling my lovable losers. 

Crimson and Pittsburgh, that is Pat's job:  batting cleanup behind Ronny.  Stoney was the greatest ever with Harry.  Alou and Mercker were the two ******* who ultimately got Chip and Steve run out of booth.  How the Tribune and the Hendry let Dusty and those whiny cocksuckers get their way is beyond me.  Oh wait, we're talking about the Tribune.  Never mind. 

I have a hard time warming up to Josh Lewin.  Everytime I listen to him, I keep thinking Gus Johnson is going jump out of that body and scream when a big play happens. 

I never thought Rizzs and Rathbun were that bad in Detroit, when I could listen to WJR on the radio when the sun went down in Iowa.  Niehaus drives me nuts with his "GRAND SALAMI" and "MY OH MY!!!!!!!" calls.  But no one, no one, can top one Mr. Kenneth Harrelson, when it comes to being the biggest homer of all time.

Good, solid. Could have sold the final out of the World Series in 2004 a little more, but what the heck (still one of the highlights of my life that I got to watch that with my old man, a former Sox season ticket holder, a year before he went to the Great Bleachers in the Sky).
Would be a lot better with Trupiano at his side because Geffner sounds like a minor league announcer. O'Brien's OK. Not bad, not great.
Could be worse. Could be Thorne.

Biggest drawback with Rizzbun in Detroit is that after years of steady analysis with Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey is they got giggly boosterism.
You're right. They were put in a no-win situation. No one was going to replace Ernie Harwell. And that's not to say that Rizzbun wasn't told to be gigglyhappy.
They lost all credibility when they started ripping Harwell hanging around the stadium and complaining when management brought him back. In Detroit, you don't rip Ernie. Period.
