Three people in the Grand Forks (N.D.) Red River High School student section dressed up as KKK members during a state tournament hockey game. The opposing high school is named after a federal judge, Ronald Davies, who ordered the high school to integrate.

Students celebrate the "white-out" tradition, but those kids knew what they were doing.

Hmmmm.....

Fargo Public Schools Athletic Director Todd Olson, former athletic director for Grand Forks public schools, did not attend Friday’s state hockey game. Instead, he was attending a Davies High basketball game, in which his son played.

Olson said late Friday he had not seen the photo but that all-white garb is generally an accepted part of the white-outs.

“To be very honest, I think you’re looking for something that is not there,” Olson said.

I have to call bull**** on that quote. How the heck can you not know that it's 10,000 kinds of wrong to dress like a KKK member. It's 2013, not the mid-20th (or maybe even 19th) century anymore.

Need to hash tag AQB's post with a #POY13 nomination.

That's one thing I really like about SportsJournalists.com - you folks are very good at saying a lot in a single sentence.

I live in ND. There is no blacks here. North Dakotans don't know any better.

Jokes aside, there is a serious disconnect here. There is no strong black representation and I've found many here who don't realize how some things are racist. They just think it is harmless.

That's the logo for Northampton (Pa.) High School. While Northampton is 98.2 percent white, it's about five miles from Allentown, which is 11.6 percent black and 10 miles from Easton, which is 16.8 percent black. And the Konkrete Kids play high schools from Allentown and Easton.

Maybe they are between a rock and a hard place.

Many people along here don't have a clue how racist an act can be perceived. What's worst is that they pass that type of behavior on to their offspring. Very discouraging.

Just wondering, if you were covering that game and noticed it, how would you have handled it?

It obviously doesn't have anything to do with the outcome of the game....but there are kids dressed up like Klansmen across the rink.

If you didn't abandon the game to write about that and I was the editor in chief, I'd have your ass in the office first thing the next morning to explain news judgment.
