Yes, headline's correct. Kid arrested. Cop of course not, they have to do that whole investigating thing before they'd take such a dramatic step of arresting somebody for this (who isn't a kid I guess).

Cop white, kid Latino. Protests growing.

The video on this HuffPo link shows about three minutes of the confrontation -- the cop will not let go of the kid, whose friends are also pleading with him to let go as he drags the kid all over his lawn. No violence and no threats until the cop starts trying to tackle the kid, some of the friends jump in, and the cop whips the gun out of his waistband and shoots (didn't hit anyone). There's an even longer video out there, but it's even more preview involving the cop dragging the kid around.

The potential for charges could get interesting. Ordinarily I'd agree that he'd never get charged, but this is Anaheim and he's LAPD. LAPD cops are widely viewed as psychotic assholes down in that part of the OC. That and the racial element probably mean this guy could be in some serious trouble.

Reading the story, it sounds like the kids were typical teenage assholes. If I had a nickel for every time me and my 13-year-old friends talked tough about how we'd sue that 18-year-old if he hit us -- as if it were some magical shield to protect us from ass-whipping -- I'd be a rich man now.
Once the situation escalated and he got knocked over by one of the other kids, it went from bad to worse.
That said, you cannot ****ing pull your gun out, let alone fire it in that situation. Especially in a residential neighborhood. Who knows what the law is regarding a civil suit. Wouldn't surprise me if the families do try to squeeze money out of him for some sort of physical (a few scratches and bruises?) and emotional distress. He should definitely lose his job, though, and maybe face whatever misdemeanor charges apply for discharging a firearm in a residential area.

Why? It's an interesting counterpoint in public reaction, and interesting that these two incidents happened a few miles apart. Not so interesting if one happened in Anaheim and the other in Georgia.
And I just said there's no condoning what the Anaheim cop did. At all.

Saw the video. The cop really didn't look well. He seemed exhausted or something. And for the record, my house was a major shortcut for kids going to the pool across the street. I don't give a crap about trampled grass. I would wave and say hello.
