I've only been propositioned in three places: Honolulu, Anaheim and Zurich, Switzerland.

Maybe you got a little too excited when she said "put it in all my holes".

Have gotten solicited probably 4-5 times in Vegas, which is a claim probably half the board can make.

One of them was pretty attractive and classily dressed, as they usually are to blend in while trolling in a casino. If looks mattered, the others needed help.

And for the record: Did. Not. Partake.

Call it what you will, but here goes. Yes, I have paid for a prostitute in my life. Did a have sex with her? Nope.

I was going through a period where I just didn't feel very, well, human. The chain-owned paper where I was working had reached the point where it was clear journalism wasn't all that much of a priority anymore. I no longer felt as though I was serving readers or performing some semblance of a public service. It was as though all the color had been drained from my chosen profession. I was young and it hurt like hell.

I tried a few things, volunteering, giving blood frequently, giving my old winter coats, blankets and flannel shirts to the homeless I'd run across, things like that. None of it seemed to help much. Soon, on Thursday and Friday nights after my shift and drunk college kids were stumbling out of the bars, I would give some of them a ride back to campus.

One night, I stopped a truck stop and noticed a regular prostitute. I had seen her before, even politely declined a solicitation once. She wasn't ugly and since it wasn't hard to sell such services at a truck stop with a motel attached, she didn't need to dress like a skank. On this night, it was clear someone had beat the **** out of her. The makeup couldn't hide the bruises. I thought about for a minute, and asked her what it take to have her until dawn. I let her in my truck, gave her part of the agreed upon price, told her I had no intention of touching her and that I just wanted to get her off the street. I drove her to a Denny's a few miles a way, drank coffee and talked with her for five hours, paid her and drove her home at dawn. That was that.

Did it help me? Somewhat. Did it help her? I wish I could say it did some good, but probably not.

I may have been solicited by a grandmother once, but I'm not sure.

I was outside my apartment, smoking a Camel, when an older woman asked me for a smoke. She had to be in her 40s or 50s, maybe even older. She looked a little worn down.

I gave her a cigarette but she didn't leave. She just kept talking: "I'm staying with my daughter and my grandchildren at the apartment down the way. I'll be there for a little while. Money's a bit tight right now. I really appreciate the cigarette. Do you want me to suck your ****? I've never given anyone a blow job before, but I'm willing to do it for you because you've been so sweet."

Me: (Taking a moment to think about what a toothless bj feels like) Um, no thanks. Here's a couple of more cigarettes. Have a good day.

A couple of years later, at a different apartment in the same complex, my future wife and I lived next to this woman and her boyfriend who had a big breakup. It was loud. We never saw him again after that. A few weeks later, we started noticing all different types of men visiting her throughout the afternoon. Eventually she had a Beemer and some very nice clothes.

My wife was certain she was hooking. I never asked. ;)

And in a related development, the Write-brained bank account seemed to run out of money faster than usual.

Not enough to wake the feds, though ...
