The Oshkosh Northwestern, a 25,000-circulation morning daily in Northeastern Wisconsin, has an immediate opening for a full-time preps reporter to join our award-winning sports section. The position involves planning sports coverage, covering games, as well as writing feature, enterprise and trend stories. Degree in journalism or related field required. Previous professional experience a plus, but recent college graduates with intern or similar experience encouraged to apply. Good benefits package (health/401K) and competitive pay. Send resume and clips to Dan Kohn, sports editor, 224 State St., Oshkosh, WI 54901.

What's competitive salary for a 25K circulation in a city that's about 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee? Just curious. Maybe $30,000, or is that way off?

The guy leaving did a good job covering preps, and he wrote some good features about a family Steve Rushin wrote about in a recent column. Here's the Rushin column:

Hey John, why don't you just post your farewell column.

Looking at the site, it looks like a lot of staff bylines on the college and high school stuff. Others is wire copy.

I think it's only four full-timers, but normally only two writers, and one of them left. But don't let that stop you from applying, cause I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

It's a good town. UW-Oshkosh (NCAA DIII, WIAC) is one of the better all-around programs in the country, and the WIAC is regarded as the best DIII leauge in the nation. Women's and Men's basketball is an annual top-25 fixtute and usually three or four teams in either M/W are in the top 5 (hoops). Football is on the rise, and two or three schools UWO plays are often in the top 10. Oshkosh West HS boys and girls hoops has made it to the state finals regularly recently, and the FVA (HS league) is close behind the Milwaukee area in terms of talent.

Both openings were filled. The preps gig was staffed internally and the SE spot was filled externally.
