Oddly enough, and referenced above, I've always been bugged when people refer to things we write as "articles," certainly when I was in the print businesss, and that carries over today.

But a weird new one bugs me, too: When somebody writes about one of our columnists, and refers, for good or bad, to a column as a "post."

Piece doesn't bother me that much.

"Nice thing you had today."

"Ive gotta do a thing on recruiting."

Etc.

Of course, at our place we're all just a bunch of rubes from Hooterville.

I, too, prefer the word "story." Sure, it's not something with dragons and monsters, but hey, it beats "chronicle."

An article, to me, is something cheap and quick that belongs in a leaflet.

Don't know why in the world I think this way.

The Romans were master builders but they built their roads straight and at right angles to each other so that intersections always involved the ability to go in one of three directions. These intersections were known as tri vias (or three roads) and is the source of our word trivia because notices and written "news" were placed at these intersections - these notices were called a "piece" (the Latin for piece is piece).

People have been calling written out news "pieces" since before the birth of Jesus. Not everything started with ****ing Yuppie scumbags.

The first time a freelance employer asked me to provide art with a story, my first thought was, What, does he want me to draw something?

A couple emails later, I was all caught up....

It's even better when they call it a "man" defense.

"Piece," "story" and "article" are all the same to me, and they're much more accurate than some people who tell me about my "bylines," "columns" and, if they read it on the Internet, "BLOGS!!"
