New York Times "trend" piece on asking for credit scores of potential mates:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/26/business/even-cupid-wants-to-know-your-credit-score.html?src=me&ref=general&_r=0&gwh=ED3F57D7326C0BA4C13C25DBA6BF6269

Interesting stuff, though I'm not sure if it's really a trend or not. You know how the Times can be.

That said, I can see how a good credit score can act as a rough approximation of a person's maturity and responsibility. I've been really working on mine. Rightly or wrongly, I feel like a high score will be a pretty nice indication that I've moved beyond certain youthful indiscretions. (But, sorry, ladies, I'm taken.)

I'm not so sure I would worry about my potential mate's credit score if we were dating in our early 20s. Or even mid-20s. Thirties? Forties? Yeah, probably. Not sure I'd be as forward as the people in this article, though.

I don't know anyone who uses credit score as a barometer to find a date. Maybe people just don't talk about it, but I get the sense this is one of NYT trends that isn't.

This was one of the people the Times surveyed.

We should just have a running thread of the dopey things the NY Times calls a 'trend'.

This guy slept with 30 pillows, but his hair in a "man bun" and shaved his pubes to keep up with all the NY Times 'trends'.

So let me get this straight:
You're a swimsuit model with 36C ice cream tits, an oral fixation and THE sole heir to the Jack Daniels distillery ... But your credit score is 380?

Yeah, sorry.

Oh, that quarter I bounced off your ass ... keep it.

Pretty sure a sole heir to the Jack Daniels distillery wouldn't know of, nor need, her credit score until way older.

There's no sex appeal in a bankruptcy.

It's a shame I'm married. And short. And fat. And balding. And otherwise ugly. Cause my credit score is higher than Snoop Dog in a Taco Bell parking lot.

I agree. Most of my 20-something friends have no idea what their credit scores are.

Well, your hairless faces are disgusting to me too.

The last NY Times trend story I can remember here was about a 5'-0", 125 pound high school kid who obsessed about body building.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Ask for a credit score from your future wife
Take it from my personal point of view
Get a high FICO score to marry you

Personally, I find this concept quite offensive. I hear where you are coming from, ****, but as 45 year old woman with a very low credit score that was no fault of my own, I find it a shallow thing to look at. Perhaps it makes sense for someone young, but at my age, when life has thrown **** at a person, I would prefer that someone find out what the circumstances are prior to making such a rash judgement.

IMHO.

At the same time, it's easier to pull yourself out of a bad credit rating when you're younger. And a 20-something may be more willing to wait for a relationship to play out. I would have thought credit rating would make more sense as a factor for a 40-year-old than a 20-year-old, though I can't imagine ever asking anyone about it.

If you're in your early 20s and you have a good credit rating, who even wants to know you? It means you've never taken a vacation you couldn't afford or run up a bar tab treating your friends to $100 worth of drinks that will cost you $200 by the time you pay off your credit card. In other words, it means you're no fun.

I'm that guy (albeit late 20s now). I ditched credit cards after my junior year of college, when I ran up a bill that I spent way too long paying off. Now, I spend only what I have.
