Pearl Jam has always been in my cultural mirror's blind spot.

They started hitting the airwaves right after I graduated college.

In the near 20 years since, my new music exposure has atrophied in a major way. Life got in the way.

It seems, though, that I should get my ass in gear and catch up with these guys.

I trust that this board can set me on that path.

What would be a top 5 list of their songs?

No way it's been almost 20 years since they hit. It was late '91 when "Ten" was released. And they didn't really explode til mid-'92. Stop making me feel old! :D

There are other bigger Pearl Jam fans here who can direct you to the best and most obscure parts of their catalogue, but if you've ever moved out of your hometown, "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" will strike you as especially poignant. And if you've ever had your heart broken, "Black" will take you back.

Thanks, BYH.

It HAS been closer to 15 years than 20.

A Pearl Jam virgin? I'm totally jealous.

Beginners Top Five:

Alive
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
Corduroy
Black
Better Man

Really hard-rocking PJ: Spin the Black Circle, Porch, Animal, Once, Evenflow, Lukin
Mellow PJ: Yellow Ledbetter, Footsteps, Indifference, WhoYou Are, Release, Immortality

I really like: Red Mosquito, Rearview Mirror, Hail, Hail, Alone

1. Rearviewmirror (By far the best song they perform live, especially given the way the song starts)
2. Alive
3. Black
4. Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
5. Indifferent/Even Flow/Jeremy/Why Go?

Great band...

Pube, you're about 20 years older than I thought...

They've got a new single out which they're giving away. I don't remember the Web site (maybe somebody else can help).

To me, they're a band that has a really, really broad sound depending on which CD you pick up. Anywho, my 5 ... in no particular order.

1. Garden
2. EWBCST
3. Glorified G
4. Daughter
5. Black

I really wanted to put Yellow Ledbetter and Last Kiss on here, too.

To paraphrase, "I celebrate their entire catalog."

You can't go wrong with the No Code album. My favorite. Also Lost Dogs is a great 2-disc collection of B sides. As far as songs, check out "All Those Yesterdays" and "Love Boat Captain."

Really, check out any of there last couple of albums. You may be surprised.

Speakin' as a child of the '90s...

Corduroy
Alive
Jeremy
Given To Fly
Footsteps

But none of these three are on their best album, "Vs."

And stay away from "Last Kiss." That, in no way, shape or form is Pearl Jam.

One of my favorite posts ... ever!

I forgot about the single that had "I Got Id" and "Long Road" on it. I might put "I Got ..." into my top five, on second thought.

The single is now available on iTunes with a second song that's even better called "Unemployment."

Rearviewmirror
Corduroy
Nothingman
Present Tense
Not For You

Honorable mention: Whippin', Wishlist, Even Flow, Light Years, Deep, Dirty Frank, Blood, Hail Hail, Nothing As It Seems
Vitalogy is their best album.
And look for live cover versions of Sonic Reducer, Baba O'Reily and Rockin' In The Free World

Never a huge fan of that song.

Mine would be:

Rearviewmirror
Black
Daughter
Alive
State of Love and Trust (off the Singles soundtrack)

I was spoiled - Pearl Jam was my very first concert. I also thought I was the **** because I quoted Black in my high school graduation speech :)

I'm not the biggest Pearl Jam fan in the world but in my opinion, "Spin The Black Circle" is one of the greatest hard rock records ever made.

I'd take: "state of love and trust"
"breath"
"animal"
"spin the black circle"
"whipping"

Of course, I'd take more the five. There are very few songs by theirs I don't like (Jeremy only because I heard so many times)
and Last Kiss.

The new single can be downloaded from their website www.pearljam.com.

Anyone going to any concerts on the first leg?

The great thing about PJ is that their stuff is so diverse and so good, they've got you covered for just about any mood you may happen to be in. That being said, here's my five:

1. Off He Goes
2. Black
3. Corduroy
4. I Got Id
5. Elderly Woman

But I celebrate the man's band's entire catalog...
