The emphasis will be on local golf, outdoors and local general assignment.
It's not a pure golf job. It's not a pure outdoors job. It's not a pure general assignment job.

Personally, I'd be nervous about going to a newspaper that just cut a couple of dozen people.

I don't think Lynn would bring someone in just to give them the boot like Greensboro. However, I know with football beginning in a couple of months, they're going to want someone in place who can step in and do the job without being coached.
I hope the suits give him the final go-ahead to pull the trigger. Getting permission to post a job opening is one thing. Hiring them is another.

I would be worried about the newspaper's long-term financial health, low staff morale in light of the cuts and the possibility that the owner might sell if it's not making enough profit.

Morale may be a problem but it wouldn't surprise me if Lynn has someone in mind for the position. If I recall, he had a couple of position open before the latest cutbacks. I'm sure he got some good people to look at from there.

Newsday's hiring an assistant SE, so I wonder if Trib's given the go-ahead to fill some key positions.

But we got approval this week to interview and hire for one new position.
So here we are. So we've decided to try to hire someone to do a little bit of everything.

If ever there is a job where everyone should apply, it's this one... I don't think there is another sports editor in the country who scours the country for candidates... Hell, two of his best finds came from Oakland, Michigan (Charles Robinson) and a PM paper in Albuquerque (Rick Maese). Rumor has it, those two have done quite well... ;D

Hoppes is the best talent scout in sports journalism by far...

I've commented on very few sports editors on this board... I don't know if Hoppes is the best SE in the country... I've never worked for him and I've only met him in passing a couple times, but those who I know who have worked for him all pretty much love the guy.

The best thing about the Sentinel is that the GA and prep writers usually get promoted quickly and it's the section that's usually raided the most for young talent...
