I'm not sure how many first cousins my mother had on her father's side -- it was at least 10 -- but every last one of them was left-handed. And neither her father, nor any of his siblings, were left-handed. Really, really long odds for that to happen that way.

I don't understand how religion could have anything to do with her reasoning. She sounds more like a plain old nutjob than a religious zealot.

That said, anyone with that kind of thought process is sucking in the wrong kind of air, either way.

My dad was left-handed, and when he entered first grade in the early 1950s the nuns were intent on making him right-handed. Fortunately my grandma put a stop to that.

My grandma was extremely Catholic and believed most of the religious claptrap, so I assume she only put up a fight because of the widely held (and since disproven) belief that forcing lefties to change caused stuttering.

Yeah, I had relatives (not in Catholic schools) who were "trained" to not be left-handed. Not because of any religious thing (as far as I know), just in the belief that they'd be better off.

Then there was that study that suggested that left-handers tend to die younger than right-handers. The reason why that inference, from that study, is likely mistaken is pretty interesting, and it's linked to efforts to "re-hand" lefties:

Over the 20th century, left handers have increased as a fraction of the population. Left handedness may be relatively fixed as a genetic matter but in the earlier decades of the 20th century children were strongly discouraged from exhibiting left-handedness. As a result, many “natural” lefties learned right-handed behavior and identified as right-handed adults. Over time, however, the cultural suppression of left-handedness declined and the proportion of adults exhibiting left-handedness increased ...
Now suppose you take a random sample of people who died in 1990. In this sample, some people will have died old and some young. Among those those who died old, however, fewer people will be identified as left-handed because the old grew up in a time when left-handedness was suppressed. As a result, the old deaths in your sample will tend to be have more right-handed people and the young deaths will tend to have more left-handed people causing you to incorrectly conclude that left-handed people die younger.
