The Odessa American, an award winning newspaper, is looking for a general assignment sports reporter.

The Odessa American is a 27,000 circulation paper in West Texas that is known for advancing sports reporters to larger papers.

The new sports reporter will be expected to cover high school football like a Division I beat to covering other exceptional minor league, college and high school sports.

The city of Odessa is well known for Permian high school football, notably the book Friday Night Lights, and the movie and TV show of the same name.

If you are a reporter with a strong sense for news, investigative journalism and ready to cover sports from a large market angle, yet at a smaller paper, then the Odessa American is right for you.

Please send resumes and references to [email protected] or to Chris Gove, Sports Editor, at 222 E. 4th St. Odessa, TX, 79762.

Thank you for your interest!

I give this one the boots seal of approval.

Chris is a great guy, and this is a tremendous opportunity to cover some quality prep football, whether you're a young buck or have some experience.

Who's leaving?

This is a Freedom paper, but apparently hasn't suffered too much from corporate woes.

The Midland-Odessa area has some neat stuff going for it (Double-A baseball, nationally competitive JuCos) in addition to the high school football. Wide-open spaces only begins to describe to landscape and it is somewhat removed from civilization, but with cable and high-speed internet one can easily keep up with the rest of the world.
