I'm curious. When did you read the book?

I just feel like I know nothing about Obama.

It's funny. When he ran in '08, some expressed concern that we didn't know enough about him.

They were mocked. Folks like **** Whitman told us, "he wrote a book about himself!" "He talked about his own drug use!"

I guess that's fair enough. But even putting aside the memoir, the idea that his background is cloaked in secrecy is absurd on its face. Find the thread where CarltonBanks told us that nobody from Harvard has ever been interviewed about him. I posted about 10-15 passages from "The Bridge," and the guy still wouldn't back down from that charge.

Look, the book tells a nice story.

The beginning and the end are true. The parts in the middle are made up.

Whatever. It's what passed for memoir when the book contract was awarded to him.

But, it doesn't tell us who he is. And, that's how it was described to us during the '08 campaign. We knew so much about him. We understood his journey!

But, his "journey" was made up for the sake of convenience and a good story.

And George Washington allegedly cut down a cherry tree in his youth and couldn't lie about it. Guess we should dismiss his accomplishments because it was just a story.

BookTV aired a lengthy interview with David Maraniss this past Sunday evening. I was more curious about his means and methods than the book subject.

It was good stuff. BookTV had tagged along with Maraniss and his wife when they went to Kenya for research and ran that portion of the piece inside Q&A with him. Mr. and Mrs. Maraniss videotaped portions of their trek through Kansas gathering information on Obama's maternal ancestors.

Among Maraniss' assertions regarding the POTUS that I didn't know:

His father was an alcoholic, horndog, and abused women. Obama moved a lot as a child. While in Jakarta, he was in a public school and didn't know the language but assimilated himself well.

Maraniss stated that he was withholding the whereabouts of the first girlfriend (Cook?) because she has a dangerous ex-husband lurking out there she's afraid of.

BTW, Maraniss was adamant that Barry was born in Hawaii.

Given the latest NBC poll show Obama over Romney among black voters by a 94-0 margin (that's not a typo), maybe this gives the Romney campaign hope it can get one black vote. Unless Ryan broke up with her by leaving a phone message.

I don't know if looking up a 2005 magazine article in which Ryan tells the interviewer his college sweetheart was black is "tracking down" an old flame, YF.

The NYT had a strange story a couple days ago about how Obama's first book was going to be used against him. I'm looking for a link. Silver's blog is generally the only thing from the NYT that I read regularly, but I can't find it right now.

Unprompted, Ayers also noted that while Dreams deserves its praise, Obama's second opus, Audacity of Hope, is "more of a political hack book."


Not surprisingly, Ayers retreated into irony as he ended the session. "Yeah, yeah," he said after confirming again that he wrote Dreams, "And if you help me prove it, I'll split the royalties with you. Thank you very much."


With his final comment, the Ayers-friendly audience laughed in relief. The media will laugh nervously upon seeing the video as well. The White House will not.


Bill Ayers is the principal craftsman behind Dreams. The evidence is overwhelming.


Ayers also established, as I have contended from the beginning, that he is not the author of Audacity of Hope. Although Obama claims unique authorship of this book too, it was, as Ayers suggests, a disingenuous feint to the center written by committee.

In the wake of Maraniss’s report that Obama had admitted the ”New York girlfriend” was ”compressed” — a composite character – the similarities to Oughton previously noted by Cashill caused the Bookworm Room blog to remark: “I mean, what are the odds that you’d combine a whole lot of different women in your life, and then come up with Bill Ayers’ girlfriend?”

Cashill says that Ayers’s own 2001 memoir, Fugitive Days, show him to be “obsessed with Oughton.”

Oughton’s “badly mangled” body was found in the rubble of a townhouse in New York’s Greenwich Village destroyed by a March 6, 1970, bomb blast. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Oughton had been studying for a master’s degree at the University of Michigan in 1966 when she met and fell in love with Ayers, then a leader of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS).

And once again, we see the "no politics" rule means, "no politics (except for disingenuous right-wing concern trolling sniping at Obama)."

When do the paychecks come in? Is it still a quarter a post?

All you ever have to know about him is that he asked out and married his mentor attorney at one of the whitest of white shoe law firms in America. When he was a summer associate, which is essentially an intern trying to get a job (which he turned down).

Maybe now, but back then a summer intern was virtually guaranteed an offer & the power balance was reversed - the firm was wining and dining the interns, hoping that they'll stay. In our firm the (unconfirmed) rumor was that there had only been 1 summer associate ever not to get an offer, in a different branch. He apparently spent the summer working with a huge knife clipped to his belt.

Of course the guy wouldn't get an offer if he had a knife clipped to his belt.

An attorney would have to hide the knife so nobody would see when the get a knife in their back. :)
