Tom Oates had a great column over the winter ripping Bielema for his handling of the media. I don't know what he's so afraid of -- it's the Madison media, not New York. No one's out to get him and UW football is the biggest show in town.

On a related note, I did go to one of the spring practices and saw a player intentionally hurt another player during one-on-one drills. The injured player needed surgery, I believe, and the other was booted off the team. So maybe Bielema just doesn't trust his team enough to practice with reporters around. Don't let Tom do his job because someone might do something to embarrass the program.

Plus, Bielema's just kind of funny looking, right?

Look at the comments, though. Almost everyone is applauding the coach for closing practices. As if that's really gonna help the freakin' team.

There are actually some people who seem to realize that this makes the reporter's job harder and thus means less information for them. I'm actually somewhat impressed.

I can understand some of why coaches want their practice closed. But then again, it will probably proliferate mis-information now. You'll get the message board folks saying, "yeah, I heard from friend of a classmate of a brother of the waitress who waited on the starting quarterback that he got hurt today in practice. Or maybe it was the center." And the rumor mill will churn all the more...
