Nope. I believe Jim Jackson and Co. won it when they were freshmen and Glenn Robinson and Purdue won it when they were sophomores.

Michigan did beat Jackson and Ohio State in the regional final to get to Minneapolis though.

The Big 10 was ****ing loaded back then.

That's the year when he changed from a nice young player to an entitled prick -- remember? Three-sport athlete at Country Day -- Basketball, AAU Basketball and Aerobics?

Ed martin died before his conviction and his record was clean, since the feds had to drop the charges because a dead man can't be found guilty.

And let us not forget, he never should have been in a position to call time out because the selfish prick SOB walked after receiving the inbound pass.

If anybody wants to scroll through the Free Press microfilm files for the spring of 1987, there was a full-page feature story, written IIRC by Mick McCabe (still the Freep's prep-sports guru today) centering on Webber's recruitment out of 8th grade to attend high school. (The top contenders being, again IIRC, Detroit SW, coached by Ed Martin's buddy-pal Perry Watson; Allen Park Inter-City Baptist; Detroit DePorres; Orchard Lake St. Mary's, and Country Day).

Ed Martin had already been in the picture for a couple of years -- he latched onto Webber in 5th or 6th grade.

I'm not trying to defend them but I had forgotten how much talent passed through that conference during that era. IU was in the Final Four with Michigan in 1992 so I'm sure they had some pretty good players too. Michigan State had a pretty deep roster as well. Illinois was still pretty solid and so was Iowa.

Oh I agree. The Big Ten gets slammed pretty good now (and rightfully so) but from the late 80s and really through the majority of the 90s the Big Ten was as good a conference as any out there. Look at Michigan State's run in the late 90s early 00s ... Wisconsin made the Final Four in 00, and I believe Ohio State got in during the 99 tourney. Making two straight years of half the Final Four coming from the Big Ten.
