Hey everybody! My name is Greg and I'm a recently-graduated journalism major from Tennessee (The real UT). This is my first post so I'm looking forward to utilizing this forum and interacting with all of you. If you have any suggestions or tips on how to expand my job search on here or just get more out my time on the site please let me know.

Hello Greg, good to have you. I think you’ll be more than impressed by the plethora of intelligent posts you’ll find on this board.

Hello Greg. You're about to be swamped by posts telling you to get out of the business while you still can. I would advocate instead that you try your hardest to be great. It's not always easy, but journalism can still be a noble, satisfying profession.

On a serious note, listen to and learn from those who have been in the trenches for a long time; read a lot of good writing and there is no substitute for hard work.

If you love it, keep doing it and don't be afraid to show/tell editors, etc. that you love what you are doing. Even in a "new" economy, there is no substitute for passion, those who hire others will recognize that. Of course, relationships help immensely, you can be the greatest writer but if you don't have any relationships, you're toast. Good luck.

Tennessee, eh?

And when you take that first vacation, no place is more convenient than Lake Tahoe.
