Wondering how things are going for the home stretch of high school for this kid.

The kid is fine. He’s used to living on his own now. We feed him every so often. But he’s enjoying the privacy when his girlfriend comes over most evenings.

His Dad got married in March. He hasn’t missed any of the son’s final high school baseball games or Senior Sunday at church. His stepmom hasn’t shown up to any.

The house is for sale. Dad is increasingly desperate to sell. Come June 1, he is moving the son into an apartment. He’s agreed to pay rent for three months, but then the kid is on his own. The kid thinks he can make ends meet working as an apprentice at a machine shop. I’ve been telling him he needs to write down a budget and stick to it. His Dad has been encouraging him to get a 2BR with a golf course view instead of a 1BR without a view for an extra $100 per month. The kid is going to be cutting it close each month as it is - without spending extra on a view he won't look at.

None of this is funny and is borderline tragic, but this line made me snicker. It reminds me of a house plant. Yeah, we water it every so often.

He’s doing well.

He works as at a machine shop - welding, running some pretty high-tech plasma cutting machines.

His grandparents (his mom’s parents) lived two doors down from us to the south. After a year of his father not being able to sell his house, they bought it - renovated and moved into the house immediately to my north. Since they had an extra house, they began renting (to own) to their grandson. So he’s back on the street. He keeps the yard immaculate. He put up Christmas lights. He works in his grandpa’s hardware store on Saturdays and eats every Sunday dinner at their house. His grandfather is very active in our United Methodist Men group. He’s gotten the kid involved - even though the average age of the group is probably 60.

The kid had a longtime girlfriend who moved into the house with him. They got engaged. After a month, she said she wasn’t ready to settle down and wanted to take a six-month break and then move back in. Eli told her “So you want to go **** some other guys and then come back to me when you’re done? Hell no.”

His oldest sister (and her wife) is moving back here next summer. She’s a teacher and we have a really solid public school system. Plus, she misses her grandparents.

As for his father … I’ve not spoken to him in more than a year. He constantly posts crap on social media about his wife and step-daughter - but nothing about his three biological kids or his step-son. Last Christmas, he took his wife, step-daughter and her BFF to Florida for Christmas. He told his biological kids they were welcome to join them - but they had to pay their own way. They spent Christmas with their grandparents. They plan to do the same in a few weeks.

TL;DR - the kid is doing great. We have a village around him. **** his dad with a rusty saw.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like he’s doing the best he can, and he’s lucky to have his grandparents be such a strong source of support.
