Tony Stewart kicking the new year off down under, picks up a black eye

IT WAS a scene that could have been taken straight out of Talladega Nights: an American NASCAR star hits a Sydney track owner with his helmet, and gets a black eye in return. It would be comical, if not for the fact it was serious enough to involve police.

Oh, god, how I was hoping that story somehow wouldn't hit this site once I saw he was texting.

No. 1: I understand he's an ex-hockey dude from the middle of America...but how can ANYONE get to a .32 and still be conscious, let alone driving AND texting?

No. 2: I only text and drive when I'm sober. I never text when I'm drunk. I need one hand to hold the beer.

It was the second time he ran into someone while texting.

And seriously, .32 was drunker than either of us was that night in Dover ... hell, it was probably drunker than both of us put together.

NASCAR stupidity shines through again. Dale Jr. wrecks in practice, has to start his qualifying race from the back in his back-up car. If he wins the qualifying race, he starts the Daytona 500 from the pole, right? Nope. Regardless of how he finishes in the qualifying race, he has to start at the back. Had he qualified third last weekend and went on to win his qualifying race, he would start on the pole Sunday.
So now NASCAR officials are stuck by their own lame rules. Follow the rule and it looks stupid. Make an exception and everyone will say the fix is in for Jr. to win. Sucks to be them.

If he wins the qualifying race, he starts the Daytona 500 from the pole, right? Nope. Regardless of how he finishes in the qualifying race, he has to start at the back. Had he qualified third last weekend and went on to win his qualifying race, he would start on the pole Sunday.

I guess the point of the rule is to keep a driver from bringing a "qualifying car" - purposely crashing it so they can run their race car? Doesn't seem to make much sense, especially with some of the flotsam and jetsam that made it into the race because NASCAR is running out of teams.
