The award-winning Orlando Sentinel sports section is looking for a talented and energetic beat writer to cover NASCAR, as well as some general assignment work. The ideal candidate will be a dogged reporter who can regularly break news on a highly competitive beat but also savvy enough to identify trends and do major enterprise reporting. The candidate will provide content for the newspaper and OrlandoSentinel.com and occasional television and radio appearances. The position will be based in Central Florida. The position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; at least five years of varied sports reporting experience at a daily newspaper; a thorough understanding of sports history, issues and personalities; and the demonstrated ability to produce lively, authoritative stories on deadline.

Oh, I suppose I'll ask the question ... how many NASCAR events would this reporter cover? And, of course, the GA part ... is that enterprise, or fill in the gaps stuff (No. 3 guy at a NFL game, No. 2 or 3 at a bowl, etc.).

Usually Orlando Sentinel job threads get heavy traffic and replies. Not so with this one. Is there a reason?

I think it got played out on the previous thread with everyone blasting Tribune for the NASCAR decision. Regardless, this does sound like an interesting position.

I would imagine that this job would entail about 10-15 races a year, but that's a guess on my part.

I love the Sentinel, but their golf and NASCAR coverage (both of which used to be outstanding) have taken brutal hits in the last six months or so...

Then you missed the multi-page discussion that resulted when the Sentinel's upper management decided that Ed Hinton is somehow not worth what he's really worth.

they are apparently getting closer to hiring somebody...I received a thanks for applying e-mail last week.

Just guessing, but even if Orlando seriously scales back racing coverage, they'll easily cover 10-15 races per year...

I sent my stuff about a month ago. It could be that they are narrowing the field to who they would like to look at once the job is unfrozen.
