Must-visit awful U.S. cities

Which U.S. cities are the worst to visit, but you should see?

Haven't gone through Pine Ridge, S.D., yet. Worst city has been Torrington, WY. Just seemed like it was a town ravaged by meth. I don't think I've seen as many boarded-up buildings in a small town as I have driving through there one hit July day several years ago.

I've driven through small towns in West Virginia that looked like complete wastelands. Obviously, lots of boarded up shops downtown, but what was so odd was that it was sunny in the middle of summer, but the town had this darkness to it because you are in a holler.

Trenton. It's god awful in parts but it's ******* gorgeous in other areas, especially Cadwalader Park area. Gorgeous churches too.

Ellarslie Museum is worth a few hours of one's time.

Art All Night is a strong event too.

And, you can dance on the Trenton Makes bridge like the Poor Righteous Teachers.

Lumberton, N.C. It's depressing in a lot of ways, but being there and learning about the Lumbee tribe is enlightening.

Petersburg, Va., is a hole, but there are some excellent historical attractions there. Of course, it's a Richmond day trip anyway.

There are a couple of towns I like that most people consider pits.
I love Philly, but I know a lot of people hate it.
I love Atlantic City, but most people do not.

I attempted an explanation in mine, though must-visit is certainly a stretch. Lumberton has lots and lots of problems. Crime is terrible, schools are bad, there's poverty and lots of drugs. There's not much for entertainment and I don't find the swamp land particularly scenic.

But with the Lumbee Indians there, it is unique. Seeing it and meeting people offers insight to a part of American history that's obscure to a lot of people and it's a glimpse at the challenges a community can face.

Paterson has the waterfalls. Years ago was known as Silk City. Also hometown of Larry Doby, Lou Costello and Ruben Hurricane Carter.
