Fine, but then don't argue that this little fandngo had any resemblance to the process that will actually occure, in secret, in March, and any pieces written out of this event that maintain that the process will operate the same way behind closed doors ought to be dismissed.

I think we all understand it's a subjective process. I give the NCAA credit for letting writers see how the process works by doing a little role-playing. Will it stave off criticism when/if someone is left out? Of course not, because applying any subjective standard is at best imperfect. You just try to limit the imperfections as much as possible. But I'm not seeing black NCAA helicopters here.

All I know is, KU got punished for years after Bob Frederick stepped down as NCAA Tournament selection committee chairman after the Jayhawks blew one No. 1 seed after another each March. And deserved every bit of it.

As for this article, I don't see anything that should rile anybody too much here.

But they didn't see "how the process works," They saw what the NCAA wanted them to think was "how the process worked." Big difference.

To many people, the NCAA bracket announcement/tournament's first weekend is the event of the year. However the NCAA is doing it, I don't really see anything that particularly needs fixing.

Lower seeds during some "down" years. One time, they had to play top-seeded Duke second round (and damn near won that game, had it not been for Nick Bradford's late giveaway); another time, a tough Kentucky team in the second round. Just some brutal draws in the late '90s.

Yup, No. 6 in 1999. Drew a good Evansville team first and lost to (I think) defending national champion Kentucky in overtime in the second round. Great game by Ryan Robertson.

In 2000, it was Dook as a No. 8 seed after getting a solid DaPaul team in the first round, which also went to OT.

I'll be ****ed if Kansas plays Belmont in the first round this year.

If someone were to write a column in which he or she said they gained a new appreciation for how difficult it can be to select a field of 65 teams, that would be fine. If they wanted to include some of the concerns that came up, great. But if they put out NCAA pap as a result, that's not fine. That's when I tell 'em I've just killed their column.

Perhaps the NCAA just needs to do away with the secrecy involved. I know that stands about as much of a chance as having the NCAA implement a football playoff system in Division 1-A unless Congress threatens to sever funding, but it would be nice.
