Saved his 596th game tonight. Record is 601.

It's a shame the record is only a year old, it will diminish what should be a historic moment.

I think with 26 games left Rivera can get at least 6 more saves.

Can Mariano Rivera pitch another five years in the majors? I'd say—amazingly—yes

it's actually more than a year old. Hoffman went ahead of Lee Smith 5 years ago.

Which happens first, Rivera to 800 saves or Jeter to 4,000 hits?

Good question. At his usual 40 saves per year pace, Mo needs 5 more seasons. Jeter will need about 900 more hits after this year to get to 4000. If he averages 180 hits per year, it will take him...5 seasons also! I don't know.

I agree, especially with the dearth of pitching.

Now, whether it would be at his high level, or even as a closer for five years, that's a different story.

Mariano's cutter doesn't require that he throws high-octane heat. He's admitted he's lost a mph or two, but his results have stayed the same because that cutter is so hard to hit.

I think he could pitch 2-3 more fantastic seasons and easily pitch 5 more if he wants.

It's amazing that a two-pitch pitcher (well, really a one-pitch pitcher) has been so successful for so long. People just can't hit that damn cutter.

oh ffs.

I'm looking forward to next month, when Manky starts the Scott Brosius and Paul O'Neill threads.

Andy Stankiewicz! Stanky the Yankee!

God, I loved that guy.

Or Brian Doyle, star of the 1978 World Series.

I'll wait patiently for those threads.

Someone say my name?

I, for one, am eager for the Mike Gallego thread. And the Alvaro Espinosa one.
